Recent law enforcement actions, such as the crackdown on a horse betting ring in Hyderabad involving nearly $1 million in transactions, highlight ongoing efforts to combat illegal gambling. Nevertheless, authorities recorded nearly 3,000 cases related to illegal online gambling and scams in the first half of 2025.

The cricket IPL season illustrated the resilience of illegal betting firms, which attracted over 1.6 billion visits, surpassing the 1.2 billion visits recorded by licensed operators during the same period. These illegal operators often lure customers with better odds, higher bonuses, and attractive promotions, all while operating outside legal and regulatory frameworks, increasing risks for players.

The persistence of the black market hampers the regulated industry and endangers consumers, especially as the Indian government considers a proposal to ban online gambling entirely.
